Laser Hair Removal Part 2

After posting my last blog post I realized there were so many more questions! I reached out to friends and clients to see what other concerns they may have had, check it out!

Q: How long does it last?

A: Laser hair removal is defined by the FDA as “permanent hair reduction” instead of “permanent hair removal”. Which means that some regrowth is to be expected, this is not a permanent hair-removal solution. A lot of people will experience no regrowth but everyone is different!

Q: How many treatments will I need?

A: That totally depends on the person, generally 6-12. Someone who has less hair will take less time and someone with more will take more treatments. Once you get started with your treatments and see how your hair follicles react to the laser your technician may be able to give you an idea of the number of treatments you'll need!

Q: Is it dangerous?

A: As with any treatment, there are risks involved. You could experience redness (pretty normal), scaring or hypo pigmentation (white discoloration). All of these risks can be avoided with the right technician. Make sure they do a test spot before any laser treatments. This is usually done close to the area being treated but in a more hidden place on your body. The technician will see how your skin reacts before doing the entire area and can avoid any major risks.

Q: Am I a good candidate?

A: Like I said in the last post someone with dark hair and light skin is the BEST candidate. This does not mean if you don't have porcelain white skin you're not a good candidate. Different lasers are used for different skin types. If you're interested in laser hair removal, go for a consultation. The technician will let you know what they can and cannot do!

Q: Is there anything I can do about dark areas that aren't responding?

A: Probably not, but maybe. There are different types of lasers for different skin types. The Alexandrite laser is for someone with lighter skin and the Nd:Yag is for darker skin types. Your technician may be able to use the different lasers on the area depending on the color of the skin. This is only if they have access to the different lasers. During your consultation I would speak with your technician about your concerns!

Q: Can I have LHR if I have tattoos?

A: You sure can! The only stipulation is that you cannot have laser done on top of the tattoo because it can cause hypo pigmentation and destroy the color of the tattoo. But it can even be done if the hair is right next to your tattoo, your technician will just have to cover the area with white crayon or tape.

Q: Can I shave, tweeze or wax before or between treatments?

A: Yes, no and no. You should arrive to your appointment with 1-3 days of hair growth in the area. You should have not waxed or tweezed the area 4-6 weeks prior to your treatment as the hair follicle needs to be present to destroy it. Between treatments you can shave but no waxing or tweezing!!

Q: How often can I get LHR treatments?

A: Every 4-6 weeks, depending on how your skin reacts to the treatment. Technicians try to catch your hair in a certain growth stage so do your best to follow their instructions!
